Obituary for Owen Glen Kimes

Owen Glen Kimes
Owen Glen Kimes, 89, of Chester, Arkansas passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 in his home surrounded by his family. Glen at the age of 5 years old was splitting rails and plowing, doing a man’s job in a time when kids had to. It was hard times. As a young man he and his best friend Ralph LaRue rode horses everywhere they went, from Chester to Cove City and vice versa. Sparking I think it was called. It was during that sparking that he met and married the love of his life, Bernice Gilstrap.
Glen could be hard in some ways, for hard was what he knew most his life. He might speak to you when he saw you and he might not, more than likely not. But when he did, you were always surprised.
He owned and operated a sawmill in Chester, Arkansas where he finally turned life around. He kept hitting the same lick and working like a mule in harness until it paid off. Crossties began to bring big prices and the man making sawdust (Glen Kimes) was finally reaping the long-awaited bounty he deserved.
He loved a good game of pool. He and his old friend Hue Peters were masters at the game. In his lifetime he owned one great exceptional horse “Copycat”. He used him after cattle on the mountain range west of Chester when it was open. The Cat horse was incredible both in the arena and on the range. Glen never quite got over losing him…but something tells me he found the Cat horse waiting at the gate, saddled and ready to ride across heaven.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Lula (LaRue) Kimes; a grandson, Cameron Simco; one sister, Imogene Kimes; two brothers, Leon and Carroll Kimes.
Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 2, 2018 at Vaught Cemetery in Mountainburg under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Bernice Kimes of the home; one son, Wade Kimes and wife Nancy of Chester; four daughters, Glenda Bradley and husband Bill of Branson, Lana Wiggins and husband Charlie of McCrory, AR, Teresa Simco and husband Steve Campbell of Goshen, AR and Lavon Marchi of Chester, AR; 13 grandchildren, Brad Kimes, Kayla McClearin, J Lee Kimes, Sharla Branson, Tressa Allen, Terrill Hurley, Casey Cristee, Alex Cristee, Phillip Wiggins, Ashley Heywood, Rachel Russo, Kiya Marchi, Marissa Kellner; 24 Great Grandchildren; one sister, Sue Ship of Springdale, AR and numerous nieces and nephews.
