Condolence: I am the son of Larry Mathews, Sr. and Jackie (Mathews) Barnett, and brother of Michael, Martin, and Larry Mathews, Jr.. Everyone in my family is/was a musician. I had not seen Dennis in many years, but there was a time when I saw him regularly. He worked with the best musicians around, including members of my family. His obit said he was a "professional musician", but his career as an entertainer spanned decades. I feel compelled to offer perspective. Of the population of the United States, there are approximately 10,000,000 musically inclined individuals that pursue training on an instrument. Of those, approximately 5,000,000 study piano. Of those, approximately 50,000 study longer than a year. Of those, approximately 10,000 will perform professionally at some time in their life. Of those, approximately 5,000 will pursue a long term career. Of those, approximately 2,500 will sustain a career for a lifetime. That makes Dennis Key 1 in 140,000. For every 140,000 people in America, there is one professional pianist of Dennis' caliber and level of success. Add to it his expertise as a vocalist, proficiency as an entertainer, ability to obtain the best engagements for highest revenue, and natural personable appeal to the general public, and these numbers soar. You have a better chance of finding a unicorn than a piano player/singer/entertainer of his ability. I should know. As a consultant for the popular dueling piano singalong bar industry, I've spent the last 30 years of my career doing just that. To say Dennis Key was a professional musician is like saying Mozart was a songwriter. My respect and heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and the scores of musicians who performed with the great Dennis Key. He will be missed for generations.
